The Division of Population Health and Applied Health Sciences (PHAHS) in the Faculty of Medicine hosts the Clinical Epidemiology graduate program, offering students the opportunity to pursue a Graduate diploma (Clinical Epidemiology), Master of Science (MSc), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree. As part of a vibrant research community, the programs in Clinical Epidemiology are aimed at university graduates intending a career in health services, faculty members seeking advanced training in clinical epidemiology, medical doctors and health care professionals interested in health care delivery research. Participants in the clinical epidemiology programs develop strong clinical research skills and gain knowledge through course work, research seminars, the completion of research projects, and the production of a thesis for the MSc and PhD programs.
The Faculty of Medicine supports a visiting speaker program, teaching assistant (TA) opportunities, internal awards and scholarships, administrative staff support and the dedicated to medicine graduate student matters. The is located in the Health Sciences Centre, adjacent to the Faculty of Medicine.
Description of programs
- Graduate diploma (Clinical Epidemiology) 鈥� is a course-based program (there is no thesis requirement and no supervisor requirement). Students complete 3 core courses and 2 seminars. The diploma program may be attractive to students hoping to expand on their current skill set in the health services arena or seeking advanced training in clinical epidemiology. It can be completed in 1-2 years of study (please note that the only available payment plan is a 3-year payment plan).
- MSc (Med) 鈥� The MSc (Med) is thesis-based and designed to be completed in two years of full-time study. Students accepted to the program who surpass minimum academic requirements and are enrolled in full-time studies in the Faculty of Medicine are granted a minimum stipend for two years. Students will generally complete required coursework within the first year and execute the majority of their research thesis preparation in the second year of their degree.
- PhD 鈥� The PhD program is thesis-based and designed to be completed in four years of full-time study. Students accepted to the program who surpass minimum academic requirements and are enrolled in full-time studies in the Faculty of Medicine are granted a minimum stipend for four years. Students will generally complete required coursework within the first 1-2 years and execute the majority of their research thesis preparation in the latter years of their degree. All PhD students at 91传媒 are expected to complete their comprehensive exams by the seventh semester of study.

The Clinical Epidemiology thesis-based programs (MSc and PhD) require research project supervision by a primary graduate supervisor, or through a co-supervision arrangement. Interested applicants are strongly advised to connect with a potential faculty supervisor prior to application.

Minimum admission requirements
- Diploma 鈥� undergraduate degree from a university of recognized standing with a minimum average of 75% over the last 2 years of full-time study and completion of an undergraduate-level statistics course.
- MSc (Med) 鈥� Bachelor's degree (minimum second class) in an appropriate area of study, completion of an undergraduate-level statistics course and agreement of a faculty member to supervise thesis research.
- PhD 鈥� Master鈥檚 degree in an appropriate area of study and agreement of a faculty member to supervise thesis research.
Application deadlines
Application deadlines to the Clinical Epidemiology programs vary:
The Diploma program only accepts admission for the Fall semester. Furthermore, it is preferable that the MSc and PhD programs commence in the Fall semester due to the availability of course offerings, however, a supervisor can opt to have a student start at the beginning of any semester.
Diploma Program Application deadlines:
- November 15 - for International Student applications (Fall admission the subsequent year)
- May 15 鈥� for Domestic Student applications (Fall admission in the same year)
- July 31 鈥� for Post-Graduate Clinical Residents (Fall admission in the same year)
Thesis-route Program Application deadlines:
MSc/PhD - No specific deadline. Please apply when you have a confirmed faculty supervisor.
