This Award was established in memory of Amanda Thomas Saunders.

Amanda Thomas Saunders accomplished her academic goals while navigating complex health circumstances. While completing her undergraduate degree at Grenfell Campus, she underwent a successful heart transplant and, during her recovery, was diagnosed with a blood cancer associated with her transplant. Amanda faced these formidable challenges and remained focused on achieving her academic goals. Amanda returned to university to complete her degree requirements and graduated in 2021 with a Bachelor of Science, major in psychology. Amanda was inspired by her healthcare team, and in 2024 she completed a Bachelor of Social Work degree to prepare for her goal of a career in healthcare. She stated that she wanted to work with young adults “to make it known that your illness is just a rock in your path, and not the final destination. Even when it seems impossible, always persevere and never lose sight of your ambitions.” During her social work degree, she experienced further health challenges which required dialysis. Amanda resiliently faced all of these circumstances with gratitude, optimism, humour, grace, and unrelenting determination. She enriched the lives of all who knew her. In the spirit of Amanda’s desire to help others, this award honours her characteristics of persistence and determination in academic achievement.

Valued at $500 the application-based award will be granted annually to a part-time or full-time undergraduate student who is enrolled in any year of study and in any degree program at Grenfell Campus, 91��ý, who demonstrates perseverance in their academic goals in the face of personal obstacles or adversity.
