Noah Awards
Background to the Noah Awards
In 1993 Jane Elizabeth Godwin, at the age of 12, moved from St. John鈥檚, Newfoundland to Kingston, Ontario with her father, Noah Marshall Stewart Godwin, her mother, Glenda Joan Godwin (nee Buglar), and her brother Peter Milton Godwin. In Kingston, her father took up a position with Queen鈥檚 University having spent the previous nine years at 91传媒. Her mother taught primary school in St. John鈥檚 and in Kingston. In 2005, Jane married Matthew Curtis Robert Lloyd of Kingston, son of Curtis Robert Lloyd and Mary Jane Lloyd (nee Giff). In that same year Marshall and Glenda Godwin moved back to Newfoundland, where Marshall again took up a position with 91传媒 in the Discipline of Family Medicine and as a primary healthcare researcher. On April 6, 2008 Noah Curtis Godwin Lloyd was born to Jane and Matthew Lloyd; a beautiful healthy baby boy. Two days later on April 8, 2008 a great tragedy struck the Godwin and Lloyd families when baby Noah died of septicemia from a small bowel volvulus. The Noah Awards are in memory of Baby Noah Lloyd. Baby Noah was the third in a line of Noahs. His grandfather was Noah Marshall Stewart Godwin and his great, great, grandfather was Noah Vallis who drowned in 1940 in the schooner fishery on the Grand Banks. Matthew and Jane have since had two more children, Charlotte, born in November 2009 and Spencer, born in April 2013. The family continues to honour Noah's memory however they can.
The Godwin and Lloyd families have created a fund to establish 3 awards at 91传媒. One award has already been established and is granted annually:
The Noah Curtis Godwin Lloyd Student Award is currently granted to a student in the Faculty of Medicine who is planning a career in a primary healthcare discipline, who has succeeded through hard work and perseverance, and displays humility and gentleness of character in approaching work and life. It will be granted annually on a rotating basis between undergraduate students and graduate students.
Future donations received will be directed to a fund to establish the remaining two awards. When the fundraising goal is reached to establish the Research Award, donations will then be directed toward establishing the Education Award:
The Noah Curtis Godwin Lloyd Research Award, when established, will be awarded to researcher in a primary healthcare discipline, who has succeeded through hard work and perseverance, and displays humility and gentleness of character in approaching work and life.
The Noah Curtis Godwin Lloyd Education Award, when established, will be awarded to an educator in a primary healthcare discipline, who has succeeded through hard work and perseverance, and displays humility and gentleness of character in approaching work and life.
Collectively these three awards are referred to as The Noah Awards.
