Pediatric Resident Research Day

On January 25th, we held our 2024 Pediatric Residents Research Day.  The day featured ten presentations from our pediatric residents.  Topics included elucidating the experiences of male identifying patients with eating disorders (Dr. Ruth Chau); assessing provider interest in transitioning to the Eat, Sleep, Console approach for neonatal abstinence syndrome (Dr. Kathryn Clark); evaluating final year curriculum changes in our pediatric residency program (Dr. Alisha Poppen); an assessment of a hybrid closed-loop system on glycemic outcomes in NL (Dr. Sophia Miao); a needs assessment on breastfeeding training during pediatric residency (Dr. Hilary Price); a retrospective analysis of unintentional pediatric injuries resulting in hospitalization and death in NL (Dr. Katie Smith); assessment of an educational session for family medicine residents on pediatric procedural sedation and analgesia (Dr. Alexis Sharp); and the effects of equity, diversity and inclusion workshops on perceptions of resident trainees (Dr. Sara Trincao-Batra).

  • Dr. Lydia-Elizabeth Lanteigne was awarded the prize for the best resident research proposal. Lydia is helping to develop a trauma-informed, occupational therapy-led sleep intervention for children living in alternate care. Her supervisors are Dr. Leigh Anne Newhook, Dr. Sandra Luscombe, and Dr Anne Drover.

  • Dr. Brandon d鈥橢on was awarded the Best Resident Research Completed Project for his project 鈥淚mproving children and families鈥� healthcare experiences through a Community Social Pediatrics model.鈥�  His supervisor is Dr. Sarah Gander.  Brandon will now go on to represent our Discipline at both the Faculty of Medicine鈥檚 Resident Research Symposium on Feb 5th and the National Pediatric Resident Research Competition, which is being held this May.

The judges for research day were Dr. Kathleen Hodgkinson (91传媒) and Ms. Rozane El Masri (91传媒 / Janeway Pediatric Research Unit).

On January 30th, we held our 2025 Pediatric Residents Research Day.  The day featured ten presentations from our pediatric residents.  Topics included Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia 1: A review of patient family experiences with childhood screening (Dr. Brittany Ryan); Risk Factors for Spontaneous Intestinal Perforation in Canadian Neonates (Dr. Alexa Comeau); Effect of a Hybrid Closed-loop System on Glycemic Outcomes in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes in Newfoundland: A Retrospective Study (Dr. Sophia Miao, Dr. Heather Power); Streamlining Critical Sample Collection for Hypoglycemia in the ICU: An Evaluation of Quality Improvement (Dr. Connor Bray, Dr. Jo-Anna Hudson, Dr. Heather Power); Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) workshops show potential in giving tools to Pediatric Resident trainees to respond to challenging situations (Dr. Sara Trincao-Batra, Dr. Heather Power, Dr. Amelia Stritzke); Current state and needs assessment of social pediatrics training in Canadian pediatric residency programs (Dr. Joanna Lo, Dr. Roger Chafe, Dr. Leigh-Anne Newhook); Epidemiology and factors associated with mortality among pediatric major trauma patients in Nova Scotia: A 17-year retrospective analysis (Andrea Sadoway, Renee Kinden, Mete Erdogan, Nelofar Kureshi, Dr. Michelle Johnson, Robert S. Green, Jason G. Emsley Sadoway);

  • Dr. Fraser Jang-Milligan was awarded the prize for the best resident research proposal for her project 鈥淧atient and public opinion about genetic testing for a newly discovered cancer genetic gene change (-82G>C) in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL)鈥�. Her supervisor is Dr. Paul Moorhead.
  • Dr. Jessa Vokey was awarded the Best Resident Research Completed Project for her project 鈥淒ental Concerns in the Janeway Children鈥檚 Hospital Emergency Room.鈥�  Her supervisors are Dr. Archna Shah and Dr. Roger Chafe.

On January 22, we held our 2026 Pediatric Residents Research Day, featuring thirteen presentations by our pediatric residents. Topics covered a wide range of clinical, educational, and quality improvement initiatives.

Creating a Medical Education Resource for Pediatric Trainees, General Pediatricians and General Practitioners on Targeted Therapies in Pediatric Oncology (Dr. Elise Ewing); Effects of early nutrition on the Prevention of Allergic Disease: Have the practices of General Pediatricians and Dietitians in Atlantic Canada changed over the past decade? (Dr. Julie Croucher); Experiences of caregivers of children with Medical Complexity with advanced care planning in Newfoundland and Labrador: A qualitative study (Dr. Natasha Noel); Incorporating Early Literacy Promotion into Pediatric Inpatient Admissions : A quality improvement project (Dr. Charis Huddle); Assessment of Metabolic Bone Disease of Prematurity in Premature Infants in Newfoundland and Labrador (Dr. Nadine Houlihan); Oxygen Saturation Targets and monitoring in Pediatric Inpatients with Respiratory Illness: A scoping review protocol (Dr. Max Landry); Defining the prevalence and exploring characteristics of the Cerebral Palsy population of children and youth in Newfoundland and Labrador with a specific focus on nutrition, feeding and growth (Dr. Melissa Tobin); Assessing Provider Interest and Confidence: Transitioning to Eat, Sleep Console for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (Dr. Kathryn Clark); The Effectiveness of Final-Year Curriculum Changes in a Pediatric Residency Program on Preparedness for Practice in Recent Graduates (Dr. Alisha Poppen); Patient and Public Opinions about Genetic Testing for a newly discovered cancer genetic gene change (-82G>C) in Newfoundland and Labrador (Dr. Fraser Jang-Milligan); A Trauma-Informed, Occupational Therapy-Led Sleep Intervention for Children living in Alternate Care: preliminary results (Dr. Lydia-Elizabeth Lanteigne).

  • Dr. Kristen Hawkes was awarded the prize for Best Resident Research Proposal for her project, Parental Refusal of the Newborn Vitamin K Shot in Newfoundland: Emerging Trends and Consequences. Supervisors: Dr. Fardy and Dr. Hudson.
  • Dr. Ruth Chau received the Best Resident Research Completed Project award for her study, Illness and Treatment Experiences of Male-Identifying Children Enrolled in a Pediatric Eating Disorders Program: A Qualitative Study. Supervisor: Dr. Dominic. Dr. Chau will represent our discipline at the Faculty of Medicine鈥檚 Resident Research Symposium and our program at the National Pediatric Resident Research Competition this spring.
