8.9 Certificate in Geomatics and Environment
The Certificate in Geomatics and Environment is of interest to students from a broad聽range of backgrounds. It is a valuable complement to social, natural, and applied聽sciences programs such as anthropology, biology, computer sciences, earth sciences,聽history, economics, engineering, health and medicine, physical oceanography,聽environmental sciences, and environmental studies.
The fields of remote sensing, geographic information sciences and systems and聽cartography provide the most effective methods of gathering, managing, analyzing, and聽representing geographic information. Remote sensing images provide resourceful聽information to observe and study cultural and physical landscapes. Examples of remote聽sensing applications include the monitoring of spatial changes, environmental quality聽evaluation, natural resource exploration, assessment and monitoring, and聽archaeological site assessment. Geographic information sciences and systems enable聽the compilation, organization, and processing of spatial (maps) and non-spatial (text聽statistics, graphs) data. Socio-economic, political, and environmental management聽decision-making is supported by the results of GIS analyses and modeling. Cartography聽involves the compilation, organization, and visual representation of spatial information.听A variety of geographical information can effectively be communicated through聽cartography.
8.9.1 Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences Certificate Regulations
Students intending to complete a certificate program within the Faculty of Humanities聽and Social Sciences must meet the admission requirements as outlined in the聽University Calendar. Students are also advised to consult the University Calendar聽regarding General Regulations for Certificate Programs and Graduation Requirements.
8.9.2 Advising
Throughout their program of study, students shall contact an academic advisor or the聽Program Director of the Certificate in Geomatics and Environment for assistance with聽course planning, declaring their program of study, prerequisite and registration issues,聽and with questions about the eligibility of any courses not listed here.

8.9.3 Declaring the Certificate in Geomatics and Environment
Students interested in a Certificate in Geomatics and Environment are first encouraged聽to consult with the Program Director to discuss the requirements of the program. After聽consultation with the Program Director, students wishing to enroll in the Certificate can聽declare a Certificate in Geomatics and Environment by contacting the Office of the聽Registrar. 8.9.4 Regulations for the Certificate in Geomatics and Environment
The Certificate in Geomatics and Environment consists of 21 credit hours in eligible聽courses as prescribed below:

12 credit hours in Geography 2195, Geography 3222 (or equivalent), Geography 3250, and Geography 3260.

6 credit hours in Geography聽4261 and Geography 4203; or, 6 credit hours in one聽of Geography聽4261 or Geography聽4203 and one other approved elective course聽at the 4000-level as described below.

3 credit hours in one additional approved elective course as described in Eligible Electives for the Certificate in Geomatics and Environment table below.

8.9.6 Regulation Concerning the former Diploma in Geographic Information Systems
A Humanities and Social Sciences Certificate in Geomatics and Environment聽cannot be awarded to those who have already been received the former Diploma in聽Geographic Information Systems.
