Nursing in Indigenous Research in Action (NIRA) Chair

Applications are now open for the Newfoundland and Labrador NIRA Chair. The application deadline is February 2, 2027.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and 91传媒 are partnering on a new Chair for the province. It is one of 10 new Chairs in the national program, led by the CIHR Institute of Indigenous Peoples鈥� Health.

The program supports research led by Indigenous nurses and shaped by the health priorities of First Nations, Inuit and M茅tis communities. It also mentors the next generation of Indigenous nursing researchers and helps build culturally safe, anti-racist and gender-responsive health systems.

What鈥檚 Available?

Up to $1.175 Million Over Five Years

The Chair receives up to $235,000 per year for five years:

  • $90,000 per year in salary support for protected research and leadership time
  • $90,000 per year for research activities
  • $40,000 per year for trainee and mentorship support
  • $15,000 per year for community engagement

Eligibility Requirements

Who Can Apply?
  • Nurses who hold at least a master鈥檚 degree
  • Applicants who self-identify as First Nations, Inuit and/or M茅tis
  • Applicants who can show meaningful, culturally safe and community-accountable work with Indigenous Peoples, communities, organizations or health systems
  • Applicants who will be affiliated with an eligible institution or organization in Newfoundland and Labrador by August 1, 2027. This can be a post-secondary institution or affiliated organization, or an Indigenous not-for-profit organization with a research mandate.
  • Work with Indigenous communities and Nations whose homelands cross provincial boundaries can be part of the Chair鈥檚 program

Key Dates

  • Information webinar: Tuesday, October 13, 2026
    2鈥�3:30 p.m. Newfoundland time (1:30鈥�3 p.m. in most of Labrador)
  • Application deadline: February 2, 2027
  • Funding decision expected: July 2027
  • Chair begins: August 1, 2027
